Causes of Infertility

At Nicosia Fertility, we recognize that infertility can result from numerous factors affecting both men and women. Identifying the underlying cause is key to determining the appropriate treatment plan and guiding you on your journey toward successful conception.

Common Causes of Female Infertility

Female infertility can arise from several different issues, primarily involving the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or uterus, or due to hormonal imbalances. Some of the most common causes we treat include:

  • Ovulatory Disorders: Irregular or absent ovulation, often due to conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) or hypothalamic amenorrhea, can make it difficult to conceive. PCOS, a common disorder, affects hormone regulation, leading to ovulation problems.

  • Advanced Maternal Age: As women age, particularly after the age of 35, fertility naturally declines. This is associated with a decreased ovarian reserve and an increased risk of miscarriage and chromosomal abnormalities.

  • Endometriosis: In this condition, tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, leading to inflammation, scar tissue, and potential fertility challenges.

  • Tubal Disease: Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes may prevent eggs from meeting sperm, often due to infections, endometriosis, or past surgeries.

  • Uterine Abnormalities: Conditions like fibroids (benign tumors in the uterus) or pelvic adhesive disease (scar tissue binding organs together) can affect implantation or increase the risk of miscarriage.

  • Premature Ovarian Failure: Also known as early menopause, this condition occurs when the ovaries stop functioning before age 40, often leading to infertility.

Common Causes of Male Infertility

Male infertility contributes to about half of all infertility cases. The most common issues we see at Nicosia Fertility include:

  • Sperm Production Issues: Problems such as low sperm count (oligospermia), no sperm production (azoospermia), or poor sperm motility (asthenospermia) can significantly affect fertility. These issues may result from hormonal imbalances, genetic conditions, or environmental exposures.

  • Obstructive Issues: Sometimes sperm production is normal, but blockages prevent sperm from reaching the semen, which can be caused by previous surgeries or congenital abnormalities.

  • Immune System Disorders: In some cases, a man’s immune system may produce antibodies that attack sperm, reducing fertility.

Unexplained Infertility and Other Factors

  • Unexplained Infertility: In about 10% of cases, even after a thorough evaluation, no specific cause of infertility can be identified in either partner.

  • Secondary Infertility: This refers to the inability to conceive after previously having one or more biological children, even without prior fertility treatment.

Diagnosis and Treatment at Nicosia Fertility

At Nicosia Fertility, we conduct comprehensive assessments for both partners to accurately diagnose the cause of infertility. For women, this may include hormonal testing, ultrasounds, and evaluating ovulation patterns. For men, a semen analysis helps assess sperm health. Based on the diagnosis, we offer a range of fertility treatments including In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), egg or sperm donation, and preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD).
