Anaesthesia in Assisted Reproduction: When Is It Used?

When discussing assisted reproduction, many questions arise regarding the use of anaesthesia. Is sedation or local anaesthesia used? How long does it last? Below, we answer some common questions about anaesthesia in assisted reproduction procedures.

When Is Anaesthesia Used in Assisted Reproduction?

Anaesthesia is typically used during follicular puncture, a procedure performed after ovarian stimulation to retrieve eggs from the ovarian follicles. This procedure is necessary for treatments like in vitro fertilisation (IVF), egg freezing, or egg donation, where eggs need to be collected from the ovaries.

What Is the Anaesthesia Like?

For ovarian puncture, sedation is used to ensure the patient feels no pain or discomfort during the procedure. Once the patient is sedated, the gynaecologist performs the follicular extraction guided by ultrasound. The procedure itself takes about 20 minutes, and after approximately two hours of recovery, the patient can go home. It is important to have someone accompany you, as the effects of general anaesthesia can last up to 24 hours.

Do I Need to Rest After the Procedure?

While not mandatory, it is recommended to rest and avoid strenuous activities for the rest of the day and for the next 24 hours. Some women may experience mild abdominal discomfort or slight vaginal bleeding following the procedure. Any pain typically subsides within a day or two after the puncture.

What Are the Risks of Ovarian Retrieval?

Ovarian retrieval is a straightforward procedure with a low risk of complications. Possible side effects of sedation include dizziness, fatigue, discomfort, and vomiting, although these are uncommon. Rare complications from the follicular puncture may include bleeding, infection, or injury to the pelvic organs, but these are very rare.
