Causes of Infertility and What You Need to Know

Updated: Apr 24

Starting a family is a joyful and exciting time for many couples, filled with hopes and dreams of the future. However, the journey to parenthood can sometimes be unexpectedly challenging due to infertility issues. Infertility affects approximately 1 in 7 couples in the UK, making it a common but often distressing issue. At Nicosia Fertility, we are committed to providing compassionate and effective treatments to help improve your chances of conceiving.

Understanding Infertility

Infertility is typically defined as the inability to conceive after one year of regular, unprotected intercourse for couples in which the woman is under the age of 35. For women over 35, the time frame is reduced to six months. Infertility is categorized into two types:

  • Primary Infertility: When couples have never been able to conceive.

  • Secondary Infertility: When couples have conceived in the past but are unable to conceive again.

Common Causes of Female Infertility

Female infertility can result from various factors, including:

  • Ovulatory Disorders: These are one of the most common causes of female infertility and involve irregular or absent menstrual cycles.

  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): A hormonal disorder causing enlarged ovaries with small cysts on the outer edges.

  • Premature Ovarian Failure: A condition where the ovaries stop functioning before age 40.

  • Fallopian Tube Damage or Blockage: Often caused by pelvic infections or surgeries that can prevent sperm from reaching an egg.

  • Endometriosis: Where tissue similar to the lining inside the uterus grows outside it, affecting the function of the ovaries, uterus, and fallopian tubes.

  • Physical Problems with the Uterus: Such as polyps, fibroids, or an abnormally shaped uterus.

Impact of Age on Female Fertility

A woman's age is a significant factor in her fertility potential. Fertility generally begins to decline in the early 30s, with a more significant decline after the age of 35 due to a decrease in the quantity and quality of eggs.

Male Infertility Causes

Male infertility can also impact a couple’s ability to conceive and may include:

  • Sperm Disorders: Problems with the quality or quantity of sperm can severely affect fertility.

  • Blockages: Any blockages in the tubes that transport sperm can prevent delivery of sperm.

  • Varicocele: A swelling of the veins that drain the testicle, which can affect sperm quality.

  • Lifestyle Factors: Such as smoking, excessive alcohol use, and obesity, can impair sperm production and function.

Diagnosing Infertility

Infertility evaluations may involve a series of tests including:

  • For Women: Pelvic exams, ultrasound imaging, and blood tests to assess hormone levels.

  • For Men: Semen analysis, hormone testing, and other diagnostic measures like ultrasound.

Treatment Options

Infertility treatments vary based on the underlying cause but may include:

  • Medications: To improve ovulation or treat hormonal imbalances.

  • Surgical Procedures: To open blocked tubes or remove fibroids or polyps.

  • Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART): Such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).

Prevention and Management

While not all causes of infertility are preventable, maintaining a healthy lifestyle can improve your fertility. This includes managing weight, avoiding harmful substances, and following a balanced diet. Regular medical check-ups and early treatment of potential problems can also enhance fertility health.
