Does Egg Donation Affect Fertility?

Egg donation is a topic that often raises many questions. In this article, we aim to answer some of the most common questions about egg donation.

What Does Egg Donation Involve?

The egg donation process begins with menstruation. Ovarian stimulation is carried out alongside hormonal treatments, and progress is monitored through ultrasound scans. Egg retrieval, also known as follicular puncture, is performed to collect the eggs. After menstruation begins, the clinic is contacted to schedule a follow-up ultrasound.

Can I Donate Eggs if I Am on Hormonal Contraceptives?

Women on hormonal contraceptives can donate eggs, but they must stop taking them during the treatment month. However, women with IUDs (Intrauterine Device) do not need to have them removed to be egg donors.

Is the Treatment Painful?

No, ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval are not painful. However, you may experience mild discomfort, such as bloating, similar to PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome) symptoms, as the ovaries enlarge due to hormone treatment.

How Long Does the Process Take?

The entire process, from ovarian stimulation to egg retrieval, takes about 12 days. Once menstruation begins, a follow-up ultrasound is performed to monitor recovery.

Can I Have Sexual Intercourse During the Donation Process?

No, during ovarian stimulation, it is advised to avoid sexual intercourse and strenuous physical activities. This is to reduce the risk of unwanted pregnancy and abdominal discomfort. Once menstruation begins, these activities can be resumed.

Is There a Limit to How Many Times I Can Donate Eggs?

According to regulations in Cyprus, egg donation must be altruistic and anonymous, and the maximum number of children that can be born from one donor is limited to ensure ethical practice.

Does Egg Donation Reduce Fertility?

Women are born with a finite number of oocytes, known as their ovarian reserve. In each menstrual cycle, many oocytes are lost, with only one typically maturing for fertilization. Egg donation uses the oocytes that would otherwise be lost. Through ovarian stimulation, we ensure that several eggs mature for retrieval. In summary, egg donation does not impact future fertility or diminish a woman’s ovarian reserve, meaning donors will still have the same chances of becoming pregnant in the future.
