Follicular Puncture: Essential Insights into the Egg Retrieval Process

Updated: Jun 30

Understanding Egg Retrieval

Egg retrieval is a short, outpatient procedure that does not require hospitalization. Its primary goal is to safely extract mature eggs from the ovaries after a period of ovarian stimulation. This procedure is crucial not only for women undergoing IVF but also for egg donors and those who wish to freeze their eggs for future use.

Ovarian Stimulation and Monitoring

Before retrieval, an individualized ovarian stimulation plan is created to maximize the number of viable eggs. During this phase, which typically lasts between 10 and 20 days, our specialists closely monitor the growth and development of ovarian follicles through regular ultrasound examinations. The goal is to grow the follicles to the ideal size of 17-19 mm in diameter before proceeding to the next step.

The Role of hCG

Once the follicles have reached the appropriate size, an injection of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) is administered to trigger ovulation. Timing is crucial here; the egg retrieval is scheduled within 32 to 36 hours after the injection, strategically before natural ovulation.

Preparation for the Procedure

Preparation for follicle puncture is straightforward:

- Patients must fast for eight hours before the procedure due to the mild sedation used.

- It is advisable to avoid stressors like traffic by planning your route to the clinic in advance.

- Remove all jewelry, makeup, and nail polish to ensure a sterile environment in the operating room.

- It is recommended to have a companion for the drive home, as some may feel slightly dizzy after the procedure.

During the Procedure

The retrieval process, performed under mild sedation, typically takes between 20 and 30 minutes. Guided by ultrasound, a fine needle is inserted through the vaginal wall to reach the ovaries and retrieve eggs along with follicular fluid. The number of eggs retrieved varies significantly among women and is influenced by individual response to stimulation and overall ovarian reserve.

Post-Procedure Care and Recovery

After retrieval, patients can relax in our specially designed recovery areas until they are ready to go home—typically within a few hours. Although recovery is usually quick, we advise resting on the day of the procedure and avoiding strenuous activities for a short time.
