We understand that after delivery, you'll be busier than ever, but maintaining good hygiene is crucial for a full recovery.
Why Is Hygiene So Important After Delivery?
After giving birth, the genital area can be sensitive, especially if you’ve had an episiotomy or stitches. Keeping the area clean will help speed up the healing process, allowing you to return to your normal routine more quickly.
What Should I Do After Delivery?
Here are some gynecological guidelines and advice to follow during the postpartum recovery period (quarantine):
First Week: Use mild local disinfectants dissolved in water to rinse the genital area. If using a bidet, ensure it’s clean and that the water is fresh. Avoid stagnant water or soaps that could irritate the area.
Drying: Use a soft towel to gently press (not rub) the area dry. Avoid using cellulose wipes, which may cause irritation, and hydrophilic cotton, as it can stick to the stitches or sensitive skin.
After the First Week: You can begin washing normally, using an intimate soap that is as natural as possible and free of perfumes to avoid irritation.
Managing Lochia: Lochia, or vaginal discharge, can last for 20 to 30 days after delivery. While it may make you feel like washing more often, avoid over-washing, as this can disrupt the natural balance of the area. If you use sanitary pads, remember to change them frequently to prevent bacterial growth and possible infection.
General Tips: Always wash from front to back to avoid transferring bacteria from the rectum to the vagina. Wear breathable cotton underwear to promote airflow and prevent moisture buildup.
If you have any concerns or questions, don't hesitate to consult your gynecologist for personalized advice.
