Is Premature Ejaculation a Symptom of Infertility?

Premature ejaculation (PE) is a sexual dysfunction affecting between 10% and 20% of men. It is characterized by the inability to control the ejaculatory reflex, meaning that when faced with sexual arousal, the man is unable to delay ejaculation. This often leads to ejaculation occurring before or shortly after penetration, without the ability to block or hold back orgasm.

Causes of Premature Ejaculation

The causes of premature ejaculation can be both organic and psychogenic:

  1. Organic Causes: These are often the first to be examined and may include:

    • Use of certain medications

    • Neurological alterations

    • Vascular issues

    • Degenerative disorders

    • Infections of the male reproductive system

  2. Psychogenic Causes: These include:

    • Excessive anxiety

    • Pressure from sexual performance

    • Relationship problems

    • Depressive disorders

    • Types of sexual education that may contribute to early ejaculation

Is It a Serious Problem?

The severity of premature ejaculation depends on when it occurs. Some men may experience ejaculation before entering the vagina, while others may ejaculate on first entry or soon after starting pelvic movements during penetration. The timing of ejaculation can significantly impact sexual satisfaction and fertility.

Premature Ejaculation and Infertility

So, does premature ejaculation affect fertility? The answer is yes. If semen is only occasionally deposited in the woman’s vagina, the chances of achieving pregnancy are significantly reduced. In more severe cases, where semen is never deposited correctly, the couple may be unable to conceive naturally.

How to Address Premature Ejaculation

Premature ejaculation can cause frustration and dissatisfaction for both partners, especially if it contributes to infertility. This can lead to anxiety, irritability, and guilt, impacting the emotional well-being of both individuals in the relationship. Fortunately, there are effective treatments available:

  • Pharmacological treatment: Medications can help delay ejaculation and improve control.

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT): This can help address the psychological factors contributing to premature ejaculation.

In some cases, a combined approach of both medication and therapy is recommended. At Nicosia Fertility, our Andrology and Psychology departments work together to address premature ejaculation and reduce its impact on fertility. Our team is dedicated to helping couples overcome this challenge and improve their chances of conception.
