Embarking on the IVF journey can feel overwhelming, but at Nicosia Fertility, we're here to support you from start to finish. Understanding each step can help alleviate some of the anxiety associated with the process. Here’s a detailed guide to what you can expect during your IVF treatment.
Pre-Treatment Tests and Screenings
Before starting your IVF journey, comprehensive screenings are essential for both partners:
Ovarian Reserve Testing: This involves blood tests and an ultrasound to evaluate the quality and quantity of eggs available.
Semen Analysis: If not previously done, a detailed analysis of the sperm's health.
Infectious Disease Screening: Both partners are screened for diseases like HIV to ensure safety throughout the IVF process.
Step 1: Initial Consultation
Your journey begins with an initial consultation on the first day of your menstrual cycle. This appointment includes a detailed review of your medical history and any previous treatments. It’s a great opportunity to ask questions and discuss your concerns with an IVF specialist.
Step 2: Suppression of Natural Menstrual Cycle
Medications or nasal sprays are used to suppress your natural cycle, creating a controlled environment for IVF treatment. This phase lasts about two weeks.
Step 3: Ovarian Stimulation
Post suppression, you’ll receive Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) injections for 10-12 days to stimulate your ovaries to produce multiple eggs, enhancing the chances of successful fertilization.
Step 4: Monitoring Progress
Throughout the treatment, your progress is monitored through vaginal ultrasound scans and possibly blood tests. A final hormone injection is administered 34-38 hours before egg collection to mature the eggs optimally.
Step 5: Egg Collection
Egg retrieval is conducted under sedation using a needle guided by ultrasound, through the vagina. This quick and minor procedure allows for the collection of eggs directly from the ovaries.
Step 6: Fertilization and Embryo Development
The collected eggs are then fertilized with sperm in a lab. Over the next few days, they develop into embryos. Not all eggs will successfully fertilize or develop, which is a normal part of the process.
Step 7: Embryo Transfer
Once the embryos reach a suitable stage of development, one or more are selected for transfer. Using a catheter, the embryos are placed directly into the uterus. This step is generally painless and does not require sedation.
Step 8: Supporting Implantation
After the transfer, you’ll start progesterone supplements to help prepare the lining of your uterus for implantation. These supplements continue until the pregnancy test.
Step 9: The Pregnancy Test
About two weeks after the embryo transfer, a blood test will be conducted to measure your levels of hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin). If the test is positive, congratulations are in order!
Step 10: Follow-Up and Next Steps
Regardless of the outcome, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled to discuss the results and plan forward. If the test is positive, further monitoring and support continue. If not, we discuss additional options and support available, including possible reasons for the cycle’s outcome.
Additional Considerations
Frozen Embryo Transfer: Some embryos may be frozen for future use, providing additional opportunities for pregnancy without undergoing full IVF cycles.
Counseling and Support: IVF can be emotionally challenging. We provide counseling to help manage the emotional aspects of the treatment.
