Understanding Embryo Retention Rates in IVF Treatment
Starting IVF can feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to understanding embryo retention rates. It’s important to remember that each person’s treatment is unique, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach.
The Reality of IVF Success
Everyone involved in the IVF process strives for the best possible outcome. However, it’s crucial to set realistic expectations, particularly regarding embryo retention after retrieval. Not every embryo will progress through all the necessary stages to result in a successful pregnancy.
This is known as the IVF attrition rate—the natural decline in viable eggs and embryos as they move through different stages in the lab. This reduction happens to every patient and is an expected part of the process.
The number of eggs retrieved won’t necessarily equate to the number of mature embryos. As the eggs transition from retrieval to fertilization and through various growth phases, the number gradually decreases.
What Are the Success Rates?
While exact numbers can vary depending on individual circumstances, general success rates in IVF follow common patterns:
80% of retrieved eggs are expected to be mature.
80% of those mature eggs typically fertilize.
30-50% of fertilized eggs reach the blastocyst stage (ready for transfer).
For example, if 10 eggs are retrieved, 8 may be mature. Of those, 6 may fertilize, and by the time the embryos reach the blastocyst stage, you may be left with 1-3 viable embryos for transfer.
Although these percentages can differ for each person, a general rule of thumb is that 80-85% of eggs will not make it to the blastocyst stage.
